The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has revealed that the woman arrested for the theft of a four-day-old baby from the Mamprobi Polyclinic may have acted out of desperation to have a child.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, Dr. Lartey said the suspect, Latifa Salifu, saw a “convenient environment” and took advantage of it.
She stressed that while the act is not commendable, the suspect also requires support due to the trauma she has experienced.
“Without meaning to give too much information out, I just want to say that she is a woman in desperate need of a child. She saw a very convenient environment and took advantage of it,” the Minister said.
The Gender Minister further explained that the Government, under the guidance of President John Dramani Mahama, is ensuring that medical care and psychosocial support are provided not only for the mother and baby but also for the suspect.
The baby, who was stolen on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, at the Mamprobi Polyclinic, has been safely recovered, with the suspect in police custody assisting with investigations.
Dr. Lartey emphasised that supporting all affected parties is essential for their recovery and for preventing further trauma.
“What she’s been through is also quite traumatic… we need to support her to recover and explore avenues to address her desperation,” she said.
