The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has commenced the distribution of poultry birds to local farmers and households within the Tema Central Constituency as part of a government initiative to boost food security and reduce the national import bill.
The project, led by the President and the Metropolitan Chief Executive, aims to empower residents to raise poultry locally rather than rely on imported products.
George Batse, the Head of the Agric Department, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the distribution that the initiative served a dual purpose: lowering the high costs associated with ordering poultry from abroad and improving family nutrition through increased protein consumption.
For the first phase of the exercise, 29 beneficiaries within Tema Central received their birds.
Officials confirmed that the distribution would continue daily until the current stock was fully exhausted.
Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), leading the distribution of broiler chicks to beneficiaries, reiterated that the initiative demonstrated the government's proactivity.
