The CPP's presidential hopeful, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom has waded into the controversial UK gay aid cut threat saying it is a blessing in disguise to Ghana.
According to Dr. Nduom, the threat from UK is a wake up call to Ghanaian leaders to stop seeking for financial assistance from the foreign donors or countries.
He noted that the threat is coming from the foreigners because of the money we normally take from the foreigners to improve our lives.
“You see David Cameron is telling us that we should stop begging foreigners for survival but we have not noticed that as a country. If you take money from me daily why won’t you adhere to my commands?" he quizzed.
David Cameron has threatened to withhold UK aid from countries that do not reform legislation banning homosexuality.
The UK Prime Minister raised the issue with some of the states involved at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia.
The Former Minister of Energy in the erstwhile NPP administration blamed Ghanaian leaders for the threat, explaining, “they depend on UK, US, and other donors for survival”.
Speaking on Asempa fm’s current affairs programme Ekosii-Sen on Friday, he noted that about half of our annual budget is supported by foreigners so why can’t they dictate to us.
He admonished Ghanaians that “if we don’t want them to dictate to us, we should be prepared to sacrifice just a little for the first time and fend for ourselves”.
Though he was unable to declare his position on homosexuality, he lauded President Mills for taking bold stands on the issue.
The 2008 presidential candidate of CPP asked: “so if we have no UK, US, Germany, China and Japan can’t we survive as a country? We should be serious for once.”
He stressed that if he were the President of Ghana, all the political leaders would be summoned before an emergency meeting to deliberate on the issue and take bolder initiative on homosexuality.
