Celebrated playwright Uncle Ebo Whyte has shared his views on politics, describing it as a game that politicians understand but the public often misreads.
Speaking to Joy News, Uncle Ebo explained the inspiration behind the political theme in his latest play, Order for Four.
“I have always wondered why non-politicians take politics too seriously because my experience is that the politicians don’t take themselves too seriously. Not that they are not serious people, they are very serious people, but it’s a game and they understand that,” he said.
He added that political rivalry does not necessarily mean enmity.
“In fact, there will be people who will be surprised to find that the politicians are friends. But they are, and they understand that. The fact that I am NDC and you are MPP doesn’t mean we should be enemies. We would argue, we would argue, we would put forth our points strongly, but that is not enmity, it’s just for the sake of the nation,” he underlined.
Uncle Ebo said that Ghanaians often take politics too seriously and allow it to divide them unnecessarily.
“Unfortunately, those of us whom they are serving do not recognize that it’s a game for them and so we could even laugh about it, we could even be light-hearted about it, but people get… so, so… and I wish more people, more Ghanaians would understand that and not get so worked up to the point where they want to… they want to fight,” he highlighted.
He also discussed how his play uses humor to reflect political dynamics. By blending politics with love and everyday life, Uncle Ebo said he hopes audiences can reflect on the way they perceive political interactions.
“Politics should not overshadow relationships and the other aspects of life. You can engage critically without letting it consume your emotions,” he emphasized.
Through Order for Four, Uncle Ebo combines storytelling, music, and humor to deliver a narrative that challenges how people view politics, encouraging a lighter, more thoughtful approach.
