The United States has extended its congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect John Mahama on his electoral victory, emphasising a commitment to deepening the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
In a statement issued by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the election was hailed as a triumph for democracy and a reflection of Ghana’s resilient democratic values.
“We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry our historic relationship into the future,” Secretary Blinken stated, signalling Washington’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with Accra under the new administration.
The statement also celebrated Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang for making history as Ghana’s first female vice president.
This milestone was highlighted as a significant step forward for gender representation in leadership.
The U.S. praised Ghana’s Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society organisations, and security forces for their role in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
Additionally, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s gracious acceptance of the results was commended as a testament to Ghana’s democratic maturity.
Acknowledging reports of isolated incidents of violence and the tragic loss of four lives, the United States expressed condolences to the victims’ families and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
As Ghana embarks on this new chapter, Secretary Blinken’s statement underscores the United States’ commitment to its enduring friendship with Ghana and its enthusiasm for collaborative efforts to advance shared goals.
This message of solidarity and optimism further cements Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
