Black Queens Head Coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, says his team must make things difficult for host nation Morocco as they prepare for a crucial semifinal clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2016 after beating Algeria in a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout, following a goalless draw after extra time.
Their next challenge comes against host nation Morocco, who topped Group A after a draw with Zambia and victories over Senegal and DR Congo.
Speaking ahead of the match, Björkegren acknowledged the challenge of facing the hosts in front of a passionate home crowd but sees opportunity in adversity.
“It’s going to be a tough awakening for us in front of a lot of people,” Björkegren said.
“I also know from experience it can help you if you have a good day as a host country, but I also know it can be opposite. I know how quiet it can be even if there are 21,000 fans.”
“And when that happens, and you score, the boost will be huge. So we can change how we see about the situation. We’re hopeful we can control the moment and take our chances.”
The Black Queens will face the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco at the Stade Olympique de Rabat on Tuesday, July 22, with a place in the WAFCON 2024 final at stake.
