Sunday night, Malawi made history. The Scorchers beat Ghana 2-1 to reach their first-ever Women’s AFCON semi-final and qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In Ghana, the reaction was quiet.

Not because we don’t care. But because women’s football in this country still feels like it’s playing in an empty stadium.

I was in my room when the goal went in. No shouting from the compound. No "GOOOAL" from the trotro down the street. When the Black Stars score, you don’t even need to watch. You’ll hear it. The whole neighborhood tells you.

But with the Black Queens? You have to tune in yourself. You have to choose to care. And too often, we don’t.

They deserve better than silence

Let’s be honest. This Ghana team hurt. They took an early lead through Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah. Doris Boaduwaa thought she’d scored again, but VAR ruled it out. Coach Kim Lars Björkegren brought on Princella Adubea, Wasila Mohammed and Princess Marfo to chase the game.

They fought. They lost 2-1 to a Malawi side that also beat Nigeria and Egypt. Malawi are now World Cup bound.

But the story isn’t just the loss. It’s what happens after.

For the men, one bad game means 3 days of radio debate, Twitter trends, and "sack the coach."
For the women, one historic qualification chase means crickets.

We say we want women’s football to grow. But growth needs noise. It needs "GO GO GO" from the compound. It needs TV screens in chop bars. It needs us to post, share, and argue about it the same way we do for the men.

The Queens still have a fight left

It’s not over for Ghana. Because of the new format, the Black Queens now go into an African play-off against Côte d’Ivoire. Win that, and we still have a shot at the World Cup through the intercontinental play-offs.

This team hasn’t been to the World Cup since 2007. 19 years. These girls are trying to end that drought with less hype, less money, and less support.

Malawi just showed us what belief plus support can do. They’re debutants. They’re now going to Brazil.
So here’s my question, Ghana

The next time the Black Queens play, will we hear "GO GO" from your house?

Will we trend their names? Will we fill the stadium when CAF comes to Accra?

Or will we wait until they qualify, then say "we’ve always supported them"?

Praise them when they’re fighting. Not just when they’ve won.

Because right now, the Black Queens are fighting for us. The least we can do is make some noise.
