Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary disruption in water supply to Abuakwa District and several surrounding communities in the Ashanti Region, following the shutdown of the Owabi Water Treatment Plant.
In a press release dated January 27, 2026, GWL explained that the plant was temporarily shut down at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26.
The company explained the shutdown is a result technical fault developed with the high-lift pump responsible for drawing water from the facility’s clear well.
“The Owabi Water Treatment Plant has been temporarily shut down as of Monday, January 26, 2026, at 4:30 p.m., due to a technical challenge with the high-lift pump that draws water from the clear well,” the statement read.
This interruption is expected to affect residents of Asuoyeboah, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Pokukrom, Bokankye, Nyankyereniase, Esaase, Akropong, Mfensi, Twedie, Abuakwa, Maakro, Mim, Nkwakom, Nkawie, Toase, Afari, Wioso, Mpasatia, Abrepo Asuobonteng, Bronikrom, parts of Bohyen, the Military Barracks, and other communities served by the plant.
The statement said these areas will experience water shortages until further notice.
Ghana Water Limited management has apologised for the inconvenience, assuring affected residents that engineers are working urgently to resolve the issue and restore the normal water supply as soon as possible.
“Engineers of GWL are working diligently to resolve the challenge and restore water production as swiftly as possible,” the statement added.
