Musician Eazzy is elated that Warner Music has acquired a majority stake in the African music distribution, music rights management and artist development company, Africori.
According to her, this deal between the company she is signed to and distributes her music (Africori) and Warner would expand the network to which African artistes can access.
Speaking to BBC’s Mike Johnson on the Business Daily, Eazzy stated that “having a company like that (Warner) come on board gives us the confidence to even try different types of genre as well and tap into the world music because now you are not limited geographically, network wise and financially.”
The 'Forever' hitmaker added that African music would have a wider reach with the influence of Warner Music and artistes would be motivated to make music not just for the African continent but people across the globe to enjoy.
“Now we have a power behind us that is going to push the music to those locations (France, London, Us and many others) for us to earn more and spread our music across,” Eazzy added.
On January 12, it was announced that Warner Music Group (WMG) had acquired a majority stake in Africori.
With offices in Johannesburg, London and Lagos, Africori currently services 7,000 artists and 850 clients and reports that in 2021, its artists generated hundreds of millions of audio streams and billions of YouTube views. The company also reports to have recorded strong revenue growth across all major DSPs.
WMG said that Africori will continue to operate as an independent company, with current CEO, Yoel Kenan, remaining at post.
WMG stated that its decision to take a majority stake in Africori could see it “become the number one distributor in Africa” and furthermore, that the deal “will open up more opportunities for African artists to tap into the global Warner Music network and enjoy international success”.
Yoel Kenan, CEO, Africori, said, “African music is booming all around the world and some of our artists are right at the heart of the explosion.
“Through our partnership, Warner Music has proven that it is the perfect home for Africori and our artists going forward. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them as we break more artists on a global scale.”
Meanwhile, Eazzy who called the partnership “amazing” said this was a chance for her and other African acts to take centre stage.
“This is an amazing moment, when I heard the news about Africori and Warner Music, I had goosebumps. Regardless of your talent, it does take a lot of resources, network, money, connections, endorsements, partnerships with internationally recognised companies (to sell an artiste's music),” she noted.
