The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has concurred with President Akufo-Addo regarding Ghana’s democracy being under threat.
According to him, even though some Ghanaians can say that Ghana’s democratic regime has been good, the majority of the population would ask ‘for whom and in what way?’
He explained that this problem stems from Ghana’s ever-weakening state institutions and the growing distrust in established democratic structures.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Saturday, he said, “first of all, we see our democratic institutions getting weaker instead of stronger. We see people losing confidence and trust in our democratic structures rather than building confidence and trust in these structures.
“If you were to ask so many people on the streets, people will tell you that we are tired of this NPP-NDC business. If you ask people about the Judiciary, increasingly, people are having less confidence and trust in the Judiciary and it is same for Parliament.
“So if this is the kind of situation we find ourselves in, then of course, we should be concerned.”
He added that the monetization of Ghana’s political sphere is also a canker in the democratic fabric of the country.
“We see the monetisation of our politics. We see the extent to which it takes just the appointment of the President, not your qualification, competence, skill, but the appointment by the President to all of a sudden become worthy,” he stated.
Sulemana Braimah said with the ongoing phenomenon, it is only right that the President is concerned.
He, however, insists that the President being concerned is not enough, as he [the President] is in a position to correct the wrongs that plague the system.
“I believe the President should also be concerned about these and he is better placed to right many of these wrongs that worry many of us.”
