The West Mamprusi Municipal Security Council is working towards placing a ban on the riding of motorbikes after 8pm in the municipality.
Speaking to JoyNews on the back of several robbery complaints reported in the municipality, Chairman of the Council, Aremeyaw Somo Lucky said the move is in response to the renewed robbery and increasing activities of gunmen.
“Now, the Assembly is trying to pass a bye-law where ridding motorbikes in the various communities after 8pm will be criminal because the robbers now target the motor riders and they themselves also use motor bikes,” he said on Thursday.
Mr Aremeyaw Somo revealed the Security Council is also forming community vigilantes in hotspot areas to help fight and push out criminals.
“We have also tried to form community watchdogs where the people themselves will come out. In the case of Wungu for instance, when the women go to the market and they are coming back, the community watchdog will escort them to their communities.”
Mr. Aremeyaw has therefore encouraged residents to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves as well as their communities.
He is, however, appealing to the government to fast track the construction of a High Court in the North East Region as he believes the lack of a superior court to trial robbery cases is helping crime to fester.
Residents in communities along the Wulugu-Kpasenkpe road in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to come to their rescue as a matter of urgency.
They want a police station and security checkpoints along the 35-kilometre Wulugu-Kpasenkpe road following a resurged robbery attack in the area.
