President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to ensure cocoa farmers receive a fairer share of global prices, promising that farmers will be paid 70% of the world market price for their cocoa.
Addressing the gathering during his "Thank You" tour in the Western North Region, Mr Mahama acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by farmers, including low prices, inadequate extension services, and delays in the distribution of essential cocoa inputs.
“The people of this region are the backbone of Ghana’s cocoa production,” he said.
“But I’m aware of the hardship our cocoa farmers face low prices, inadequate extension services, and delays in the distribution of cocoa input. We will ensure our commitment to pay our farmers 70% of the world market price for cocoa,” he said.
He further emphasised that the “sweat of our cocoa farmers deserves dignity and a fair reward,” noting that the NDC government has restructured the cocoa rehabilitation programme to address issues in regions such as Bia and Juaboso.
According to him these areas have been particularly affected by swollen shoot disease and ageing trees, which have drastically reduced yields.
“Under the new leadership of the Ghana Cocoa Board, priority will be given to the distribution of improved seeds, regular extension support, and proper compensation for rehabilitated cocoa farms,” Mr Mahama said.
