The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has questioned the state of security in the country under the Akufo-Addo government.
His concern stems from the withdrawal of four military officers from the Office of the Speaker of Parliament's security attachment.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the four; WOII Apugiba Awine David, S/Sgt Agbley Prosper, WO1 Jafaru Bunwura and Sgt. Bonney Prince; were attached to Speaker Alban Bagbin's office "without proper procedure."
But Mr Ablakwa in a Facebook post, has quizzed GAF's reason on why it took the leadership about a year to discover that it deployed the said officers without due process.
Such an error, he said, cast doubt on the integrity of President Akufo-Addo as the Commander-in-Chief and the state of security.
"If it takes a whole year for Ghana’s military high command to discover that their personnel have been deployed without “proper procedure” to the Speaker’s office, what does that say about the state of security and integrity of leadership under Commander-in-Chief Akufo-Addo?"
The four officers were attached to Speaker Alban Bagbin's office since he assumed office in January 2021.
For the North Tongu MP, the Speaker may be better off without the protection he received from the military; adding that "the best form of protection can only be guaranteed by the people we serve and the Lord Almighty."
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has said the withdrawal of Mr Alban Bagbin’s military attachment is a politically motivated action aimed to diminish his confidence.
According to the Minority, the calculated move is due to Mr Bagbin’s persistent bid to impartially and independently steer the affairs of the legislative arm of government.
“The minority shall hold the government of President Akufo-Addo responsible should the security of Alban Bagbin be compromised in any way,” parts of the statement signed by Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu read.
The Majority group has however dismissed these claims. They argue that Speaker Alban Bagbin has been served with the largest number of security personnel for his protection, than any of his predecessors.
"Now the Minority Caucus’ statement states that the action by the Military High Command is politically motivated. What is the proof? Or is it the case that they consider that since Bagbin is NDC, he is there to do the bidding of NDC and hence any critique of the Speaker or any action aimed at the Speaker is a critique of or action against the NDC and therefore should be considered as being politically motivated?” it added.
