Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo for renaming the country's universities built by previous governments.
According to Mr Mahama, the NPP leader's failure to build educational institutions and renaming them after people he describes as family members and prodigies, smacks of a leader who lacks ideas.
"When people build and name Universities then he renames them. You don't know how to build universities but you know how to rename them, you must also learn how to build them," he said.
The former President was responding to the controversy over which administration undertook the building of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya.
Addressing a charged crowd in Somanya as part of his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Mr Mahama wondered why the Akufo-Addo government would want to claim glory for the institution it knew nothing about.
"Everybody in this country knows the Somanya University and several other ones were built by the NDC but you lie that you built it. Why would anybody do such a thing?" he quizzed.
The government of Nana Akufo-Addo renamed the University for Development Studies, the University of Professional Studies, the University of Health and Allied Sciences and the University of Energy and Natural Resources among others after C.K Tedem , Nana Opoku Ampomah, Komla Agbeli Gbedemah and Kofi Abrefa Busia respectively.
The NDC Presidential Candidate has an enviable track record of building schools, promising to build universities in the six newly created regions when he recaptures power.
"I will build Universities in all the six newly created regions because the NDC has proven to be capable of building institutions," he stated.
He criticised president Akufo-Addo for relocating the second campus of the Eastern Region University from Affram Plains to his constituency at Bunso.
