Former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingson revealed that he had a blackout after Asamoah Gyan missed the crucial penalty against Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana had an astonishing run in the tournament, placing second in Group D and beating USA in the round of 16 to book a historic quarterfinal place.
The game against La Celeste was 1-1 through to extra time. Ghana were awarded a spot kick in the final moments but Asamoah Gyan’s miss led to a penalty shootout which the Black Stars lost 4-2.
“In South Africa, our aim was to cross the quarter-finals," he revealed in an exclusive interview on the Joy Sports Link.
"We wanted to break that record so we were surprised that Uruguay beat us. We were confident of beating this team. We were together. There was so much unity and so much love."
“Before we had the penalty, I heard a voice in me saying ‘hold your heart’ so I was a little bit quiet and it came again. I was watching what will happen."
"When Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty, I had a blackout. Like I told you, we had the confidence that we will beat them. When we had the penalty, everyone was jubilating thinking we will go through so it was a shock."
The former Blackpool goalkeeper added that the miss made him lose concentration during the shootout.
"I wanted to be substituted after the miss but we had already used our three substitutes."
"During the penalty shootouts, I was off [not focused]. I went off after Gyan missed the penalty,” he added.
Kingson was the first choice goalkeeper in the 2006 and 2010 World cups.
