The Communications Director for the Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Miracles Denis Aboagye, says that it is not unusual for former presidents to fail in attempts to seek re-election, referring to the case of former U.S. President Donald Trump who just made a historic comeback.
He explained that Trump's victory should not be seen as an indication that former presidents will always win back power, and it will have no bearing on the upcoming December polls in Ghana.
“The difference here is that not all former presidents win power back. Only those who are deemed fit, proper, and competent regain power,” he stated.
His comments came in response to the NDC's optimism that former President John Mahama would win the 2024 election.
Mr Aboagye added, “Sometimes, when I hear the NDC talk and outline all the challenges this country is facing, I laugh." While Mr Aboagye acknowledged the challenges facing the country, he argued that the NDC should not base their campaign solely on these difficulties in the hope that it would help John Mahama regain power.
“There are real difficulties at the moment in this country, but nobody is going to vote for you simply because there are challenges, especially when your leader has already been president,” he said.
He made these remarks during an appearance on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, 9th November 2024, where he discussed the potential impact of the 2024 U.S. election on Ghana's upcoming polls.
In the recently concluded U.S. election, former President Donald Trump won 301 electoral votes, while Vice President Kamala Harris secured 226 votes, losing to Trump.
