Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has declined to be drawn into speculation about a possible bid for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential nomination ahead of the 2028 general election, insisting that the immediate priority of the government must be the delivery of its electoral mandate.

Responding to a direct question from the host, KSM, on the latest edition of The KSM Show about whether she would consider contesting the NDC flagbearership, the Vice-President deliberately steered the conversation away from her personal political ambitions and towards the task she said the government had been elected to perform.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang recalled the extensive work that went into preparing the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, saying the process involved years of consultations and contributions from Ghanaians across the country and beyond.

The manifesto, titled Resetting Ghana: Jobs, Accountability, Prosperity, became the policy platform on which the party campaigned in the 2024 elections.

She said the NDC did not receive the mandate of Ghanaians simply to begin positioning for the next election, but to address the challenges confronting the country.

“They didn't vote for us today to be turning about, going or not going. They said, 'come and solve the problems'. We have an agenda. What we inherited was a very, very tough situation. We have work to do,” She responded.

The Vice-President said any early preoccupation with who would lead the party in 2028 could undermine the purpose for which the government was elected.

“And it's not even time [for NDC flagbearer elections]. I think it's a betrayal of the cause of the people. And I don't think it is right,” She stressed.

She therefore appealed to members and supporters of the NDC to concentrate on implementing the government's programme rather than engaging in premature succession discussions.

“So please help us to fulfil the dreams of this beautiful country that we know much better, even though it is doing now. Let us focus on getting the job done,” She appealed.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the administration's success should ultimately be judged by the quality of its work and the support it provides to Ghanaians, rather than by speculation about its political future.

“And it depends on the quality of support we are giving. If you're already going left and right and centre and back.”

She concluded with a clear statement of her immediate priority, saying: “Keep the focus, full the mission, deliver results.”

The Vice-President's comments come as attention within the NDC increasingly turns towards the question of succession ahead of 2028, when President John Dramani Mahama will be constitutionally barred from seeking another term after his return to office in the 2024 election.

Mahama won the 2024 presidential election after campaigning on the promise to reset the country's economy and governance.
