Three people have been confirmed dead, with one person in critical condition, following a fatal road accident involving a tipper truck at the Apire–Hemang stretch in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday March 20, 2026, around 5:00 a.m., when a tipper truck loaded with sand reportedly suffered brake failure, lost control, and rammed into two private vehicles. The impact of the crash claimed the lives of three on the spot.
The private car with registration DV A5244 and the tipper truck with registration number GC 3786- 21 together with Toyota Vitz registration number WT 1081-21 were involved.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said some victims were trapped in the wreckage for several hours before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived to rescue them.
“Two people who were trapped in the car were crying out for help, but there was little we could do. Sadly, they died,” an eyewitness recounted.
A commercial driver, Francis Twumasi, who operates along the stretch, attributed the accident to brake failure on the part of the tipper truck.
“The truck lost its brakes, which led to this deadly accident. The situation was very terrible,” he said.
He further expressed concern over the increasing danger on the stretch, blaming reckless driving by some tipper truck operators.
“Driving on this road has become very risky. Some of these tipper truck drivers do not exercise patience,” he added.
The injured victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the mortuary.
