Four students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region have benefited from the Gertrude Quaye Memorial Scholarship.
They were given Ghȼ23,240,17 to cater for their tuition and hostel fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The students are the first batch to be provided funds under the scholarship established by the Director of the Institute of Health Research (IHR) at UHAS, Prof. Margaret Gyapong, in honour of her late mother.
The beneficiaries were Darlington Acquah Ekua, a level 300 student reading BSc. Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Anita Kekeli Gakpo, a level 300 student reading Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
The others are Dorcas Adwoa Kumi Amoah, a final-year Bachelor of Nursing student and, Mensah Gloria, a level 300 student reading BSc. Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Handing over a promotional bank cheque, Prof. Gyapong implored the beneficiaries to contribute back to the scholarship scheme after completing school, to enable others to benefit from it.
She also entreated them to maintain their Grade Point Average (GPA) during their studies at the university, urging them to identify and mentor young ones to chart a path that leads to academic excellence.
Prof. Gyapong advised young females from especially poor backgrounds not to look up to old men for money to survive, but rather focus on their studies and pursue academic excellence for a brighter future, irrespective of their circumstances.
“Don't say that I am poor so I am going to chase some old man to give me money, no”, she said.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Prof Lydia Aziato, congratulated the beneficiaries and implored the public to contribute to the scholarship schemes being operated by the University.
