The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and Chairman of the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee, Professor Alex Dodoo, has revealed that approximately 70 percent of cement manufacturers in the country adhere to industry standards.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Professor Dodoo commended the well-established cement companies for their compliance but expressed concern over some new entrants.
“We have traditional companies that we know in the cement manufacturing industry and they have played by the book because they have huge brands to protect. But we have got new entrants in the industry. Of the new brands, I will say that about 50 percent have given us anxiety,” he disclosed on Wednesday.
Professor Dodoo emphasised the importance of strict adherence to standards across the board.
According to him, although most producers of cement meet the benchmark, the 30 percent failing is equally very concerning.
“I will say at least 70 percent are playing by the book, but even if 10 percent are not playing by the book, that is too much, they should all play by the book,” he stressed.
He then noted that GSA is committed to maintaining high standards in the cement manufacturing sector and has therefore intensified its oversight measures.
