The Volta Region branch of the Ghana Journalist Association has directed its members to “stay away” from covering functions organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nkwanta South Constituency.
This follows an attack on the Oti Regional Correspondent for Adom TV, Benjamin Owusu, by the party’s Constituency Secretary, Prince Succeed Fiagbedzi, during the just ended primaries in Nkwanta.
A directive signed by Secretary to GJA-Volta, Alberto Mario Norreti, condemned the act and assured the association would “pursue the matter to its fullest degree” in ensuring justice for the victim.
Mr Fiagbedzi was reported to have subjected the reporter to beatings for filming a brawl between supporters of NDC parliamentary aspirants at the polling center.
He was subsequently arrested by the police and granted bail to assist in investigations.
Meanwhile, the reporter, Mr Owusu complains of severe pains in the head, ear and neck as a result of the brutality meted on him by the politician.
“I was just doing my work when he [Mr Fiagbedzi] rushed on me and slapped me. I went unconscious for about a minute”, he said in a telephone interview.
“I want to pursue the issue at the law courts and ensure he’s punished”, he said.
