The Vice-chairman of Parliament’s Appointment Committee (PAC) has defended the House’s decision to appoint a three-member committee to choose an auditor to audit the work of the office of the Auditor-General.
The House approved a resolution on Thursday to appoint Deputy Majority and Minority leaders, Adwoa Sarfo and James Avedzi, as well as Kofi Okyere Agyekum to search for an appropriate auditor or audit firm to audit the work of the Auditor-General.
Edward Dery Kaale–Ewola told Joy News even though this is the first time this is being done, it’s backed by the Constitution.
“It is not regular practice. We have never had that. I don’t remember it anyway. But, it is in the constitution that there should be a special committee to investigate and audit the Auditor, and appoint an auditor to audit the Auditor General,” he said.
He added that whatever findings or recommendations come out of the auditing exercise will be implemented as required.
“So if the recommendations indicate that some punitive measures have to be taken against some people, definitely, the measures will be taken depending on what recommendations come out from the auditors,” he said.
According to him, no decision has yet been made as to who would audit the Auditor General’s office, but whatever happens, the recommendations will be laid before the Speaker for implementation.
