A Complex Emergencies Expert has said Ghana’s best bet to limiting the spread of the deadly coronavirus infection will be to implement some known enablers for halting viral diseases.
Casely Coleman, who is also a fellow at think tank IMANI Africa, said these enablers, four in all, presents a credible strategy to fighting the disease.
Speaking on PM Express on the JoyNews channel on MultiTV, he said the first strategy is to implement a set of activities that involve surveillance, isolation, testing and treatment.
The second is social distancing, which has been explained as a set of non-pharmaceutical interventions or measures taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance between people and reducing the number of times people come into close contact with each other.
“The third is practising water sanitation and hygiene protocols with a lot of emphasis on community engagement to drive that,” he said.
The fourth, strategy, he said, is “building an agile response intervention which can be scaled up if the disease escalates.”
While commending the lockdown introduced to restrict the movement of people in the Greater Accra Region and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, the Complex Emergencies Expert said security personnel enforcing the lockdown must respect the right of citizens.
As of Sunday, March 29, Ghana has recorded 152 cases of the virus with five deaths. Globally, some 786,608 infections have been recorded with 37,832 deaths and 165,874 recoveries.
