The Leipzig, Germany chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has challenged former President John Mahama to respond to reports linking him to a bribery chain involving aviation giant Airbus.
In a statement the diaspora body said the 2020 NDC presidential candidate “owes the nation a great deal of responsibility and accountability, especially in this Airbus scandal, for all fingers point to him.”
Their demand follows a ruling in a UK court where Airbus admitted five counts of failing to prevent bribery by its officials.
The report mentions Ghana among other countries where Airbus is said to have paid monies to secure competitive advantage in securing contracts.
The transaction is said to have happened during Mahama’s tenure as president but the report mentions no names except featuring a certain 'government official one' which critics including the governing NPP say is the ex-president.
Mr. Mahama has not responded to the claims although top officials of the National Democratic Congress have dismissed them.
But joining growing calls for Mahama to speak on the matter the NPP-Leipzig added in their statement that: “Recalling his remarks in a BBC focus on Africa interview, Ghanaians are aware former president Mahama finds it difficult answering questions on corruption since he will like to know if the question relates to him ‘as a president or as a person’. Like the BBC’s Peter Okwoche, we inquire, ‘Mr. President, did you take it'?”
