Former Black Queens captain Adjoa Bayor has described the team’s failure to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as the worst moment of her career.
Black Queens missed out on qualifying for the first time after losing to West African rivals Nigeria in a two-legged affair.
Black Queens secured an impressive 1-1 draw against the Super Falcons in the first leg played in Nigeria. All the team needed in the return leg was a goalless draw or a win to qualify.
However, the match ended 1-1. The tie thus had to be settled on penalties which Super Falcons won 3-2 and qualify for Athens.
“It was this game (against Nigeria), I wouldn’t like to watch it, I couldn’t eat for about a week,” she said on GTV Sports plus.
“The whole nation was behind us and it was a big opportunity for us to make it for the first time.
“We had the advantage after Mamunatu saved two penalty kicks but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalize on that.
“It was a very sad moment for all the players and for me I will say it is the most painful defeat suffered during my time with the team.”
Three years later, Bayor led Black Queens to qualify for their third successive World Cup.
