A Bole Court has discharged five out of the seven persons who were arrested in connection to the lynching of the 90-year-old Akua Denteh in the Savannah Region.
The five; Haruna Aness - 34, Issifa Tanko - 35, Issifa Sachibu - 32, Shaibu Muntala - 29, and Sulemana Ali - 35 were acquitted after the Regional Attorney General’s Department legally counseled the police to do so.
Speaking in an interview after the court proceedings, Legal practitioner Salia Kudus said the two others; Hajia Serena Mohammed and Latifa Bumaye will still be in police custody and be charged with conspiracy to commit murder and trial by ordeal.
“These are offenses which carry the death penalty so they will be tried before their sizes court, that is, the High Court, which will be presided over by a judge with the assistance of a seven-member jury,” he explained.
He revealed that the case of the two offenders has been adjourned to October 13 to begin the trial process.
"We [AG's department] getting the District Court to commit them to stand trial is to send a message to all Ghanaians and the international community that Ghana does not condone crimes," he stressed.
Lawyer Kudus then urged residents of the Savannah Region to change the narrative of witchcraft accusation
