Vice-Chairman of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee has accused the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining of doing a poor job.

According to George Mireku Duker, the team’s performance on galamsey was below expectations.

“I mean the inter-ministerial committee didn’t do a good job as far as the whole fighting of galamsey is concerned.”

Delivering the State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo lamented the destruction caused by the menace.

The inter-ministerial committee chaired by Environment Minister Prof. Frimpong Boateng was established by Akufo-Addo at the height of the illegal mining fight in the country.

But, the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) noted that the committee has disappointed President Akufo-Addo.

“Those he (President Akufo-Addo) entrusted his vision, kind of disappointed him, and I must be frank on that point that we could have done it differently,” he added.

Members of the said committee include Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Asomah Kyeremeh, Local Government Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry, and Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul.

Anas and his TigerEye PI team in February 2019 published an expose which showed state officials including the then Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining and presidential staffer, Charles Bissue, allegedly taking bribes to sidestep the laid down procedures for the procurement of mining licenses.

However, Mr Bissue has since been cleared of corruption by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
