Accra is still on course to become the cleanest city in Africa, Sanitation and Water Resource Minister-designate has stated.
According to Cecilia Abena Dapaah, government has rolled out various policies and interventions aimed at achieving this target.
“Accra is on course to become the cleanest city that the President gave in absolute terms. I think we are on course, looking at what we started doing and what I continued from my colleague,” she said during her vetting on Tuesday.
This comes on the back of a pledge by President Akufo-Addo to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his first term in office.
Rendering an account on behalf of the government after the four year term, the Minister-designate has indicated that government has provided bins “for littering to stop.”
She added that the government has also provided toilet facilities to some 33,000 households to curtail open defecation in the country.
She, however, indicated that there are a few loopholes that need to be addressed in order to completely achieve the President’s aim of making Accra the cleanest city.
She further proposed that “there should be a Sanitation Fund, either supplied by the government of Ghana or through a Sanitation Levy so that we will be well-equipped financially to take care of the gap in the financing of sanitation in this country.”
