The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Minority Members of Parliament (MP) to be firm and resolute in making decisions during the ongoing vetting of Akufo-Addo's ministers-designate.
In a communique signed by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah after an emergency meeting held on Monday, he insisted that the NDC parliamentarians on the Appointment Committee should reject unqualified nominees.
“The meeting discussed among other things, the ongoing vetting of ministerial nominees and urged the NDC Parliamentary caucus to be firm and resolute in their duties on the Appointment Committee," he said.
The advice seems to have been heeded as so far reflected in Monday's vote on the vetted nominees.
The Minority MPs on the Appointments Committee, have unanimously rejected three of the President’s appointees.
The committee is made up of a total of 26 members – 13 each from the NDC and the NPP.
Information Minister-designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson and Minister-designate for Food Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has been rejected for various reasons.
However, Asiedu Nketia further added that the committee should hold ministers-designate accountable for their actions which violated the office they held.
He also advised the NDC to reject the “insincere apologies” of some ministerial nominees who have appeared before the committee.
"It urged them to reject insincere apologies rendered by some of the nominees at the Vetting Committee sittings and hold them responsible for their actions and statements which violate the obligations imposed on Public Office Holders by the 1992 Constitution.”
