The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu says the 2021 budget as presented by the majority lacks transparency.
Speaking to climax the debate on the budget statement on Friday, the Tamale South MP accused government of failing to produce official records of the true state of the economy.
He also alleged that government spent about GH₵19 billion although the House approved GH₵10 billion for domestic support from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
“There is clear lack of transparency, clear lack of obedience to accountability. But government must come clear, on are true state of affairs. Government must clear on how much we have borrowed unlawfully from the Bank of Ghana because we allocated only for ₵10 billion.
“However, records available to me indicates that the Bank of Ghana gave to government beyond the ₵10 billion to a figure of ₵19 billion,” he stated.
“How much did the Bank of Ghana finance government in the year 2020? Was it 10 billion, 19 billion or 29 billion? We demand answers from a government that purports to believe in accountability and transparency.”
The legislator then warned that BoG’s Governor will be made to face the consequences of his actions.
Commenting on the government’s decision to freeze wages for public sector workers, the leader of the NDC Caucus said it is against the Labour Act.
“In this budget, the workers of Ghana do not know their fate, you have not determined the minimum wage which will affect the private sector. Neither have we determined public sector wage, as it is required of you as stipulated by the Labour Act of Ghana.
“I hear Mr Speaker, government is contemplating on a wage freeze, I do not want to believe or accept it."
