The Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Peter Attafuah has charged heads of schools within the region to employ the services of special trainers and consultants in their preparation for the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
He believes that preparation for the NSMQ should go beyond the usual teaching to include strategic training of contestants.
No school from the Northern Region has ever won the NSMQ trophy or made it to the finals of the annual competition since it was started 26 years ago. Dr Attafuah says that can be remedied with an elevated strategy of preparation.
"It is not just the normal teaching that will make the students come and do well. There is a strategy. And people with those skills are being called to come and support the teams. Those consultants [should be] called and I think that when that is done we will be able to win the cup," he noted.
Meanwhile, Tamale SHS has established its status as the landlord of the Northern Region by securing a spot in the finals of the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz slated for October in Accra.
Tamasco outclassed its opponents from Kumbungu SHS, Yendi SHS and Wapuli Community SHS at the end of the four-round qualifier. They secured a total of 65 points in that impressive win which left Yendi SHS at a distant second position with 13 points.
Wapuli Community SHS garnered 06 points while Kumbungu SHS scored negative 3-point
The school which is starting its 2021 NSMQ campaign from the regional level after failing to reach the qwuarter final stage in the previous edition hopes to make a real effort at the trophy this year.
In a separate contest, Kalpohin SHS rose from being underdogs to stun St. Charles Seminary in their contest to book a place in the national tournament. The school got a rare second chance in 2019 qualifiers to make its debut in the competition.
That year, they lost their first contest, and all seemed to be over. But then, Bole SHS didn’t turn up for their contest, and that gave the Tamale based school another chance to contest in their stead, being the highest scoring losing school in the 2019 qualifiers.
But also on the first day of the 2021 Northern Regional qualifiers, Tamale Islamic SHS and Business SHS won their respective contests to become part of the four schools which join already seeded Northern School of Business, to confirm their qualification to the national tournament in Accra
