The Executive Director of Child Rights International, Mr Bright Appiah has indicated that Achimota School has the right to appeal the order by an Accra High court for it to admit two Rastafarian students.
An Accra High Court on May, 31 ordered Achimota School to admit the two Rastafarian students in spite of their refusal to trim their dreadlocks as required by the School.
Although a ruling has been made by the court, Mr Bright Appiah believes the School has the right to appeal the case.
“It is also the right of Achimota School to appeal the case. So even before the judgment, I had a discussion with Tyron and the family that anything is expected, so we need to also prepare for all the things that will come out of it, and we took certain steps,” he said.
He added that, the students have the upper hand at the moment since the judgement ruled in their favour but there might be some uncertainties which they should prepare for.
“For now, we know that the court has instructed them to admit the child so until then the uncertainties are there and we have to prepare the child for those uncertainties. But for now, I feel that a window has been opened and we need to take advantage of that and see what will happen in the future,” Mr Bright Appiah said.
The ruling follows a suit by the Rastafarian students seeking to enforce their fundamental human rights.
Both boys, who were denied admission due to their dreadlocks prayed the court to compel Achimota School to admit them into the school and the court granted their request..
