Programmes Manager of Asempa FM, Philip Osei Bonsu has stated that it was erroneous on the part of President Akufo-Addo to look at the work of some media house over the past few weeks as a campaign against Free SHS policy.
According to him, the major stakeholders in the education sector were given the chance to provide their side of the story, hence the inappropriateness for the President to have passed such a comment.
"Even if we take Joy FM, I mean the Ministry of Education was on the show to state their side of the story and I think once we have those engagements it’s all for the betterment of our country," he said.
His comment come after the President on Saturday May 29 during his speech at the University of Cape Coast said he was under the impression that Free SHS was approved by everyone including the political parties, until he learnt about discussions on the radio station which according to him sought to discredit it.
“A radio station is currently running a campaign against Free SHS. During the last election, I got the impression that Free SHS was endorsed by all parties and all that was needed to do was keep improving it. Would a spirited defence of Frees SHS constitute an attack on press freedom? I wonder.”
This was after Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, last week, offered headteachers, teachers, parents, students and the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, an opportunity to discuss challenges being faced in the implementation of the government’s flagship programme.
In an interview on PM Express, the host of Host of Ekosiisen noted that the media has the role to play to ensure that the policy is made better for it to work effectively.
"The intention is not to denigrate the policy, to make the policy unpopular or anything of that sort. It is our role to make sure that we build this policy to make it better, stronger and work well," he said on Monday.
He told Evans Mensah that "I think people should understand the media from that angle and of course when you do any story about free SHS the constitution is clear that any medium for the dissemination of to the public which publishes a statement about or against any person shall be obliged to publish a rejoinder if any from the person in respect of whom the publication was made.”
