The National Tenants' Union of Ghana has called on government to convert the Saglemi project into a social housing scheme.
In a statement issued Monday and signed by General Secretary, Frederick Opoku, the Union said, "we call on His Excellency, the President of the Republic, to use his office to declare the Saglemi affordable housing project a social housing for the poor who cannot afford the relatively high cost of affordable housing projects by the government."
The cost of these houses, he noted ranges from GH₵9,000 to GH₵340,000.
The Union has also advised the incumbent government to "fast-track the completion of the Saglemi housing project made up of 1,500 housing units and lease it out as a rent-to-own scheme."
Meanwhile, the National Tenants' Union has disclosed its intention to pay a courtesy visit to former Presidents John Mahama and Agyekum Kuffour to canvass support in order for government to consider its suggestion with priority and provide decent, affordable and secured homes for the majority of Ghanaians.
The said visits will take place between August and September this year.
Other opinion leaders the Union is expected to draw support from are; Chief Imam Shiekh Professor Nuhu Sharubutu, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin and the Christian Council.
