Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has revealed that the country is expected to receive about 1.2 million doses of Pfizer vaccines before the end of August this year.
Speaking at a Press conference on Wednesday, he stated that, “we are expecting about 1.2 million Pfizer vaccines from the US through COVAX, and we are hoping that latest by the middle of August, it should be available.”
As part of government's quest to achieve herd immunity in Ghana, Mr Kuma-Aboagye noted that aside the Pfizer vaccine, the government has also made other requests for more vaccines against the virus.
According to him, Ghana will soon receive 250,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine through the COVAX facility to inoculate those who are yet to get their second jab.
Also, his outfit through the African Union, will secure 17 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
His comment comes at a time when the country is recording a surge in Covid-19 cases. So far, active cases have moved from 1,849 to 2,247, indicating a 398 increment in active cases.
According to GHS, the country has lost two more lives to the novel coronavirus disease. This brings the total number of deaths recorded to 801.
The hike in cases has triggered some concerns among the Ghanaian populace with some experts predicting a third wave in the country.
But Dr Kuma-Aboagye believes that, with strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols, Ghana can escape the third wave that could overwhelm the entire health system.
