Ten more people have succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic in less than 48 hours as of August 1, 2021.
This was revealed by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) during a press briefing on Wednesday, August 4, on the steps taken by government to curb the spread of the virus.
According to Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the recent deaths bring the country's death toll to 854. This is as against 844 deaths reported on July 30.
The active cases reported so far, he noted, stands at 6,766. He described as alarming the increasing rate of the cases.
"As of the 1st of August, we have confirmed a total of 106,434 cases. The total test done is 1,459,845 with over 98,814 recoveries and we have so far recorded 854 deaths. You can see that we started this problem with about 817 deaths so you can see how many people have died.
"Our current active case is 66,766 and this is quite worrying. That tells us that in the last few weeks, our active cases have increased from 1,600, that is in the last one month to over 6,000. There has been a very steep rise in the active cases in the last two weeks," he said.
Some regions that have started recording worrying numbers of Covid-19 cases aside from the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions are the Volta, Bono and Bono East Regions.
The Volta, Bono and Bono East regions have recorded 532, 200 and 178 active cases respectively as against 16, 8 and 3 active cases reported as of July 1.
The surge in cases can be attributed to the new delta variant of the coronavirus.
Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye further revealed that a total of 404 schools in the country have recorded Covid-19 cases.
According to him, 2,864 total cases were reported while 304 are active.
The active cases so far have been recorded in seven regions. They are the Volta, Ashanti, Oti, Eastern, Bono East, Greater Accra and Western Regions.
The Volta Region has the highest number of cases, being 650.
Following the surge in Covid-19 cases, the Ghana Health Service is urging members of the general public to strictly adhere to all the safety protocols.
