The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Juaben in the Ashanti Region, Alex Safo Kantanka, appears before the Special Prosecutor today over allegations of bribery and corruption.
Alex Safo Kantanka was seen in a viral video demanding a refund of monies he paid to Juaben assembly members to influence their votes.
On Monday, assembly members of Juaben gathered for the second time to confirm the MCE nominee after he failed to obtain the required number of votes for confirmation.
As desperate as the MCE nominee was to be confirmed, he was alleged to have given out monies to influence assembly members for their votes.
But the MCE nominee was rejected after he failed to obtain the required number of votes for confirmation for the second time.
In a viral video, he was captured demanding from some assembly members monies he was alleged to have given in return for their votes.
Police in Juaben municipality subsequently arrested him for interrogations but later released him on self-recognisance bail.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, then served MCE nominee summons to appear before him for questioning on Tuesday, November 9.
In a letter to the MCE nominee, the special prosecutor indicated that his office has commenced investigations into the alleged corruption offences.
“The office of the special prosecutor has commenced investigations into allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences (especially corruption and intimidation in respect of a public election) particularly in relation to your nomination and confirmation or otherwise as to the Municipal Chief Executive of Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region,” the letter noted.
Mr Alex Safo Kantanka is expected to attend the special prosecutor's office with a counsel of his choice.
