Municipal Chief Executive of the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region, Maxwell Lugudor, has explained NADMO’s delay in providing relief items to persons affected by Sunday’s destructive tidal waves.
Mr. Maxwell Lugudor, on Monday, told JoyNews that he had received assurance from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to the effect that relief items will be presented on Tuesday.
However, three days after the tragic incident, the affected persons are yet to receive the items.
“They were putting our things together to help the victims. With our place, because we are closer to the lagoon; we are able to pump the water from the ground into the lagoon so our place is totally dry now. In Ketu South the NADMO officials are yet to get to the grounds with the relief items,” he said on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday with Evans Mensah.
“The delay is from NADMO and I don’t want to blame anybody. They also have their challenges. I don’t know why they delayed but they may be mobilizing their stuff before they provide it. They are distributing the items according to the districts. This is a national disaster, no one planned for it. We are appealing to everybody that can be of help,” he added
The Ketu South MCE assured his constituents of going all out to ensure that the needs of victims are well-taken care of.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, has also asked Ghanaians to extend a hand in support.
Whilst assuring that the government will come through with some form of relief, Dr. Letsa said support from well-meaning citizens will be welcomed.
Thousands of residents in the Anlo District, Ketu South, and Keta Municipalities were rendered homeless after tidal waves swept through their homes on Sunday dawn.
Communities such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope, and Keta Central are largely affected and residents have nothing to salvage.
Meanwhile, Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has assured of budgetary allocation for the completion of the Keta sea defense wall project.
