Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre has lauded the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for a good job done since assuming office.

Prof. Kwesi Aning scored the IGP 6.5 out of 10 for bringing sanity to the Police Service and instilling discipline in communities and on highways.

The IGP has, since his assumption of office, received plaudits from many who have described him as a man on a mission to restore confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

His road shows, visits to victims of Police violence, as well as his vision to improve the Service have been well received by Ghanaians.

Speaking on the AM Show on Thursday, Prof. Aning said the recent actions taken by the Police administration to tackle security challenges in the country is commendable

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate him 6.5.  When Dr. Dampare was appointed, I also made it clear that because of his stance, two things will take place. One will be a reluctance of the powers that be to give him the free hands.”

Prof. Aning said he is not surprised at the “positively robust response from the Police,” adding that “within the time he's been in office, [there is] discipline that we see beginning to emerge in Ghanaian society.”

Citing the recent Nima-Maamobi violent clash, he urged the Police to beef up their efforts to nip such acts in the bud.

“So far, so good. Even on the roads, drivers are now disciplined. A lot needs to be done and the gangsterism in Nima shows there's a lot to do. But I can assure you that change has come and the Ghana Police Service will work and respond to the challenges we're facing. Kudos to them.”

‘Reckless’ prophecies

Professor Kwesi Aning also touched on the issue of prophecies in the country, saying the Police administration's directive to religious leaders against predictions that induce fear was a step in the right direction.

“The good Lord speaks only with one voice. People have given prophecies and when they're challenged, they change it. Charlatans in this business who bring God's name into disrepute have all run away.”

“In the Old Testament, those who did God's work will still have given prophecies because it was the work of God. So the charlatans should stay where they are and allow Dr. Dampare to do his work. They should keep on lying or double-crossing people because they'd be dealt with,” he warned.

President Akufo-Addo appointed COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Ag. IGP effective from August 1, 2021, to replace James Oppong-Boanuh.

Until his appointment, he was the Director-General in charge of Administration at the Service.
