Today on JoyNews, Newsfile took a look at the initiatives taken by the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the surge in military takeovers on the continent.
This discussion was necessitated by a coup attempt in Guinea Bissau on Tuesday, February 1. President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo foiled the plans of the military.
Following the incident, ECOWAS Chair, President Akufo-Addo has charged colleague Heads of State to take decisive steps to address the trend of coup d’etats witnessed in the sub-region.
Also, host, Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panelists determined whether Ghana's democracy is on sale.
The probe is as a result of a study by the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD) that revealed that nine individuals who are allegedly engaged in illicit activities, funded some political parties during the 2020 elections.
The financiers are said to have funded the campaign with the aim of making friends to ensure the sustenance of their businesses should the recipients of the funds win the polls.
Last but not least, Newsfile looked into the reason government has refused to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and decided to introduce the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-levy) that has sparked controversy in the country since the Finance Minister announced its introduction.
Meanwhile, Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, will withdraw the controversial Electronic Transactions Levy (E-levy) in Parliament and re-introduce same later.
