A Reverend Minister has advised couples not to cut ties with old friends after getting married.
According to Rev. Harrison who is an ardent listener of Joy FM, "friendship is very important. You can't say your husband is your only friend."
He noted that "friends could be lifesavers during hard times in marriage," adding that "through some friends, doors (of blessings) will open."
He said this as part of conversations on Friday's edition of the Super Morning Show with regard to what people think about keeping best friends of the opposite sex even after marriage.
As friendship grows, people may develop mutual affection for each other. As a result, people find it difficult to break away, hence, creating a ‘best friend’ relationship.
When it’s a male-male or female-female ‘kind of thing’, it’s not much of a problem. However, when it involves people of the opposite sex, there are issues. Hosts of the show sought the views of listeners on whether they would be comfortable with their partners having a best friend who is of the opposite sex or not.
While some held the view that there is nothing wrong with that, others thought that it can pose a threat to the marriage or relationship.
Quoting Proverbs 18:24 the Reverend Minister said, "A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (NKJV), he contended that some friends are 'add ons' in our lives."
According to him, such a friend does not get in the way and create problems in the marriage.
"You have to define the parameters. Friendship is very important and you can't do without it," he emphasised.
