The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has vowed to ensure that all persons involved in clashes between some alleged illegal miners and security personnel at the Nkroful District Magistrate Court are punished.
Dr George Akuffo Dampare, speaking during a visit to the Ellembelle District following what was described as an attack on police personnel at the Essiama Divisional Police Headquarters, stated that Police are determined to enforce the law irrespective of who is involved.
“Big or small, anybody at all who is involved in this, whether it is one by one, or two by two [they will be dealt with].
“We came to assure you that everything that we need to do to protect law abiding citizens and take lawless people from society and for them to face justice will be done,” he assured.
The IGP further stressed that there are procedures for registering grievances.
“Nobody can hold institutions or individuals hostage for the purposes of getting what they think belongs to them,” he said.
Disagreements between some youth and security personnel over arrests at a mining concession resulted in gunshots, injuries, and the death of one person.
The incident resulted in the destruction of state properties.
Meanwhile, the Ellembelle MP, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, is pushing for an independent investigation into the role of the security agencies leading to the shooting and the death of a miner.
“I do not believe that it should be as easy as that to kill any human being. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened.
“So there has to be a real investigation to get to the bottom of this and make sure that we can research and address this recurrent issue,” he stated.
In a related development, one person died during a shooting incident at Asunafo in the Kwabeng District of the Eastern Region.
The incident left eight others with gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Police revealed that the shooting occurred during a community clash between two factions over a mining activity in the town.
Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, says the Police are probing the incident.
So far, two persons have been arrested in connection to the incident.
