A joint coalition of commercial transport operators, spare parts dealers and Okada riders have served notice to embark on a demonstration on the 26th and 27th of June over what they described as the rising cost of operations.
The Coalition made this known at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, June 22.
According to them, a gallon of fuel which is about 4.5 litres costs almost 51 Ghana cedis.
Some neighboring countries, including Togo, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, they say are selling fuel at ₵5 to ₵6 per litre while fuel is being sold at close to ₵13 per litre in Ghana.
This, they say easily makes Ghana the country with the highest cost of fuel in the sub-region.
A spokesperson for the joint coalition of commercial transport operators, spare parts dealers and Okada riders, Aminu Yussif, said government must immediately address the continuous increase in fuel prices.
“Nothing has been done about our frequent speech to the government so we are going to join the Arise Ghana demonstration to tell the Government to do something about it.
“Government should do something about the two weeks increase in fuel prices. They should do something about it because we cannot always be there and fuel prices are increased every two weeks,” he said in an interview with JoyNews.
Transport fares are expected to go up by some 10% later this week if the unionised operators, Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, are able to get the Transport Minister’s blessings on this margin of increase.
However, at a meeting between the two bodies and the Transport Minister last Friday, June 17th, 2022, there was some agreement that the fares should be reviewed.
But a final agreement was not reached on the margin of increase of the petroleum products.
The meeting also agreed that the time has come for some taxes on fuel to be reviewed.
