The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region has criticised the government's plan to construct a four-tier interchange at Suame Roundabout in the Ashanti Region.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Regional Communication Officer in the Ashanti Region, Abass Nurudeen stated that the sod-cutting ceremony for the "Suame Interchange is nothing more than a face saving gimmick".
He added that the ceremony was with “no real intent.”
According to Mr. Nurudeen, the ceremony "was in response to the recent anger that was vented on the Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kye-Mensah Bonsu whose constituents accused him of doing very little about the deplorable state of roads in Suame."
It would be recalled that in June, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was booed by residents of Suame over poor road network in the area.
A vehicle of the MP for Suame, a constituency in the Ashanti Region, was reported to have been pelted with sachet water and other items such as coconut husk.
Few days after the protest, Parliament approved a €135 million facility to finance the design and construction of phase 1 of the Suame Interchange and ancillary road projects in Suame in the Ashanti Region.
However, the NDC Ashanti Regional Communication Officer noted that, “this Suame Interchange project will not see the light of day before the eventual exit of the NPP from office in 2024.”
This, he explained, is because President Akufo-Addo has failed to give the Sofoline interchange project in Kumasi any priority since assuming office six years ago, therefore the 4 tier Suame interchange will not be any different.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has charged contractors of the project and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to help ensure the country gets value for money, as well as ensure strict adherence to completion dates.
