Over 30 members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have asked government to reinstate the work-from-home policy.

In an interview aired on Joy FM's Midday News on Thursday, the leading member of the group, Dr Kojo Asante stated that the work-from-home policy will ease the economic burden on Ghanaians.

According to him, when this is done, it will also help “mitigate the pressure on young people and those in the lower income bracket to manage the cost of transport.”

“I strongly recommend that government encourage public and private employers to return to the flexible working or work-from-home scheme deployed during the Covid-19 lockdown and after,” he proposed.

Meanwhile, Ghanaians in the next 48 hours will be paying more for transportation as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is set to increase fares by 19%.

This notwithstanding, President Akufo-Addo and his cabinet are deliberating on ways to address the worsening economic hardship.

Key on the agenda is government's quest to seal a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before the presentation of the 2023 budget in November.

President Akufo-Addo in an interaction with the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) ahead of the cabinet retreat said it is crucial for the country to secure a deal.

“It is very important for me that we should get a negotiating process that would be concluded by the next we read the budget again in November.

"This hit in our public finance system persuaded me to seek assistance. One to try to turn out country to macroeconomic stability and secondly to repair our public financing and thereby strengthen our balance of payment,” he explained.
