The Volta River Authority (VRA) has suspended its planned spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams “due to the reduction in rainfall in the Volta catchment area over the past week.”
It explained that the circumstances that called for the earlier plan to undertake the exercise no longer exist.
“The inflows into the Akosombo Reservoir have also subsided to normal levels and there is therefore no threat to the safety of our dams.
The planned spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams will not be carried out as earlier announced,” a statement dated October 31, 2022 said.
Meanwhile, the VRA has cautioned people living along the banks of the Volta River and downstream of the two dams to remain alert until the rainy season is over.
Following the rising levels of the water in the dams beyond its capacity, the Authority announced in an earlier statement that it was going to open the spill gates of the two dams.
But the situation has changed, which has called for the new directive to halt the planned exercise.
“VRA will also continue to monitor the situation, work with stakeholders, and issue updates should further developments occur. We wish to thank all our stakeholders for their support and co-operation.”
