The Business Development Manager of Ghana Premier League side, Samarex Football Club, Paul Anyaba, has declared that the club has no problems with low patronage of the league.
According to the former sports presenter, the community-based structure of the club allows the people of Wassa to own the football team, which translates into high attendance at their home grounds, the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.
He also says the lack of natural tourist sites and other competing brands in Samreboi plays to the advantage of the team as residents solely consume the products of the club as their source of entertainment.
Low attendance at several stadiums around Ghana's top division this year has left local clubs struggling financially.
The Multimedia Group's Luv FM and Nhyira FM have begun a radio campaign to draw attention to the reasons behind the low attendance at Ghana Premier League games and to promote suggestions to increase support for the league.
Speaking to Felix Adu Darkwah of LUV Sports on the campaign to improve attendance at matches, the Samartex BDM emphasized that the club always records high attendance at their home grounds.
“We do not have a problem with low patronage, Samartex is a community-based club largely owned by the people of Wassa.
“What the owners have done over the years is to gift the club to the communities and let them own the club. That has worked to a very large extent,” he said.
The campaign is hashtagged #FillGPLCenters.
