The Oti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Kwadwo Gyapong, has asked flagbearer hopefuls of the party to rescind their decision to contest for the position.
He said former President John Mahama has been recognised as the sole candidate to lead the party to victory and deliver the country from its economic woes.
The Dean of the Regional Chairmen caucus of NDC was speaking at the campaign launch of the former President in the Volta Region on Thursday.
At the launch ceremony, Mr. Mahama officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearership of the NDC.
According to Mr. Gyapong, aside from John Mahama, none of the flagbearership candidates have shown commitment and proven worthy to lead the party.
He explained that in the NDC if you have never been a Member of Parliament (MP) before, you are not qualified to lead the party.
“Everybody will want to go for John, everybody is calling him, it is not about the NDC but the whole country.
“But I have a problem, I don’t want those guys [flagbearer aspirants] to have even two percent of the total votes cast.
“…… in NDC, God has given us a line to follow. If you have never been an MP before, you can’t be a president for NDC.
“If you want to be an MP and you want to be the president of Ghana under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), your constituency should give you the green light first, then your region will give you and after that, you have been endorsed”, he said.
Mr Gyapong asserted that if the aspirants want to contest for the presidency on the ticket of the party, they should have proof of winning a constituency election.
He explained that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has credible candidates who are fighting to lead the party, thus NDC also needs candidates who can match up.
“NDC we respect commitment, we respect loyalty and honesty. All these three people I have mentioned are from my region and have never thought of winning Ashanti, they haven’t.
“Let them go and win the seat for us. When you go to NPP, fear them. … they have won their seats before and they are fighting for presidency", he said.
He added that the flagbearer aspirants are waiting to take over the position from the former President who has already done the job at the grassroots.
“…. People are just sitting down waiting to park Mahama, to come and tell me that I am a youth. ……Somebody who doesn’t even know the assembly concept.
“How are you coming? you better join the line. ……. Have you won your seat before? Charity begins at home. Have you won it before? Who should do the monkey job for you to become the president of this country? He asked.
The NDC stalwart noted that, if they [aspirants] are able to win their constituency and regional elections, they will be endorsed to lead the party.
“You want to come and just jump the gun? Please kindly join the queue, win your constituency and win your region then we can allow you to go”, he said.
