Oti Regional NDC Chairman, John Kwadwo Gyapong is confident that the NPP will not end the two-term cycle Ghanaians have adopted for every party in power, dubbed ‘break the eight’.

According to him, due to the prevailing economic crisis, the election of former President John Mahama as the NDC flagbearer will give the party a win in the 2024 presidential elections.

The NPP is hopeful of winning the 2024 presidential election, thus break the eight-year cycle.

However, speaking at John Mahama’s campaign launch on Thursday, Mr Gyapong said that “there is a very nice thing God has told me that as for the break, they can break the eight in Nigeria but they can never break the eight in Ghana.”

He called on all NDC members to massively support Mr Mahama during the flagbearership elections stating that an overwhelming majority will not give opposition the chance to ridicule the former president and the party in 2024.

“As for the flagbearer, he is. My problem is the percentage, because NPP will use it as a campaign. Let's get over 98% of the vote for our flagbearer,” he said.

This comes after Bola Tinubu was declared the winner of the just-ended 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

Mr Tinubu stood for the elections on the ticket of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bola Tinubu won with 8,794,726, beating Peter Obi who polled 6,101,533 and Atiku Abubakar who garnered 6,984520 votes respectively.

Earlier, John Mahama announced his intentions to contest the 2024 presidential elections after being defeated in the last two elections held in 2016 and 2020.

However, the former President believes that he has what it takes to help salvage the country from its current economic crisis.

Meanwhile, also speaking at the campaign launch, Prof. Joshua Alabi, campaign manager for the former president believes that John Dramani Mahama represents the National Democratic Congress’ best shot at the 2024 presidential elections

Prof Alabi added that people are calling not just for the return of the NDC into power but also to bring forth someone with experience to save the economy.

He noted that Mr Mahama has a sense of urgency when it comes to salvaging Ghana and has a clear path on how to rescue and rebuild the country.
