The State M/A Basic School in Kumasi is in a state of near collapse as students are exposed to the risk of weak structures.
School authorities describe the failure to rehabilitate the school building as “a complete dereliction of duty” on the part of the government.
They have called on educational authorities to consider its reconstruction to avert any future inconvenience.
The State M/A Basic School at Bantama in Kumasi was constructed in 1940.
The school has over the past 70 years seen no major renovation. The school block has deteriorated and in a near-collapse state.
Most classrooms have been locked due to the threat posed to students.
Major parts of the building are tattered with ripped-off roofs. This has attracted encroaches to claim several lands of the basic school.
The school, which could accommodate about 800 students a year, currently has 100 students as anxious parents continue to withdraw their wards.
Chairman of the school’s management committee, Peter Akwasi Preprah Gyamfi, is worried about the neglect.
“This condition is very worrying. We have taken steps to ensure the safety of students but things are getting out of hands. We are pleading with government to come to our aid,” he said.
The Accountant of the School’s Management Committee, Bosia Amponsah Mensah, called on the government and alumni of the school to come to their aid.
“We are calling on old students all across the country to come and help us. This is when we need them most,” he added.
Some students also pleaded for the renovation of the school building.
“We are pleading with government, please come and fix our school for us, we are scared”.
